Writing an opinion essay
1. At the beginning of writing your opinion essay, you should catch your audience’s attention. Here you need to present your opinion statement.
2. In the middle of the paper you should
- begin every part with a topic sentence stating one main reason,
- join sustaining details,
- utilize transitions to join ideas,
- give an ending sentence,
- present opposing points of view and provide arguments against them.
3. At the end, you need to restate your opinion, sum up main reasons, and provide a call to action.
Revising your opinion essay
Writing does not finish with the initial draft. Then, you will have to revise it. When writers revise their papers, they assess their work for thoughts, voice, organization, sentence fluency, and word choice. Here you will find some questions to consider while reviewing your draft.
1. Ideas:
a) Have you presented a clear opinion?
b) Have you used enough reasons to maintain it?
2. Organization:
a) Do your reasons emerge in the good order?
b) Do you employ transitions to make your organization clear?
3. Voice:
a) Does your voice show your interest in the problem?
b) Does your voice fit your readers (not too casual or too formal)?
